Puran Poli | Recipe

Puran poli is made on the day of holika dahan. It is a traditional Marathi sweet dish made out of Bengal gram and jaggery.

  • 250 gm Jaggery
  • 250 gm Split Bengal Gram
  • 250 gm All purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • Ghee for frying poli
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Ground cardamom
  1. Mix the flour, salt and oil in a bowl.

  2. Add water and form a soft dough.

  3. Let it rest for a minimum of 6 hours in the refrigerator.

  4. Meanwhile wash the split bengal gram and cook it in pressure cooker for 4 whistles or till it has completely softened.

  5. Use a hand blender to mash it.

  6. Add the jaggery to the mashed daal and keep the vessel back on flame.

  7. Mix until all the jaggery is dissolved and the mixture is dry enough to form a ball out of it.

  8. Add nutmeg and cardamom powder to this mixture and mix well.

  9. Remove the dough from the refrigerator let the dough come down to room temperature.

  10. Knead it once more and make small balls out of it.

  11. Make balls out of the the daal and jaggery mixture. 

  12. The dough balls should be half the size of the puran(filling) balls.

  13. Cover the filling with the dough and roll it into a flat disk or roti.

  14. Fry the roti on the the sides in ghee.

  15. Serve hot with fresh cream.
